Thanks!

I am a graduate student with about 10 years of experience who is ready to share my passion for photography professionally. I shoot digitally with Canon equipment, which allows for a lot of flexibility and nearly instant gratification! I love the feeling I get when I look at an image and see something that wasn't there before- something that would have been lost forever without a picture to tell the story.

When I'm not behind a camera, I am a linguistics MA candidate at Wayne State, a mom to a cute baby girl and two doggies, and I am an avid knitter (oh how I love to knit!). When I got married in 2006, I did everything myself. Everything- the flowers, the invitations, the decorations, the vows, the menu planning... it was exhausting, but I loved that my husband and I could make each detail of the day a reflection of the happy, funky people we are. We knew that even with our modest budget, we wanted fabulous photography... but we couldn't do it ourselves, so we shelled out more on that one element than we did on anything else (except the food. we love food!). I understand the dilemma of the DIY bride, and I want to give you awesome photographic coverage at a (low introductory) price you can get behind. I love to photograph the little touches as much as I love to get the big emotions, the loving faces, and the party people! I want to help you capture those tiny moments in between the big ones and tell the complete story of your event, and your love!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Chelsea and Tim on Halloween!

This wedding was near and dear to my heart- it's always nice to see a loving couple get married, and it's even sweeter when they're family. :) I am honored that Chelsea and Tim allowed me to photograph their awesome Halloween wedding!

Below are some of my images. I have tried a few processing techniques, but I do shoot entirely in color, to provide flexibility after the fact. If you see something you like, or if you have something in mind, feel free to let me know how I can put it to work on your wedding images!

Thanks!

I am looking to build my portfolio, and so I am interested in couples who want fresh, emotive, and creative photographic coverage of their wedding at a low introductory rate. I am offering my services for $500, which include:

  • all day coverage (up to 10 hours)- this includes getting ready, ceremony, portraits, and the reception (and I won't skip out after the cake is cut- a lot of the fun happens later in the day!)
  • unlimited locations within the metro Detroit area (specifically, 40 miles from my location- Dearborn, MI)
  • a disc of high-resolution, retouched digital negatives for you to keep, and to print as you wish
I am willing to design albums, create DVD slide shows, and provide 4x6 printed proofs for an additional fee. Travel outside the metro Detroit area is negotiable.

I am also available for engagement portraits for a $50 sitting fee- you choose the location(s) (high-resolution digital negatives will be included on a disc for you to keep). This is a great way for us to get to know each other and decide if I am right for your wedding!

If you are interested in setting up an appointment to talk about your wedding and how I can provide a creative perspective, please call (734) 476-2673 or email me at vmachak@gmail.com.

Thanks for your interest in Paper Crane Photography!

Frequently Asked Questions

Thanks!

1. How do you pronounce your last name?
It may not look like it, but Machak rhymes with "paycheck" (say it with me... MAY-check!).
2. What happens if your camera breaks in the middle of our ceremony?
Don't worry! I have backup camera bodies and lenses. I also bring tons of batteries, backup memory cards, and a point-and-shoot camera, just in case. If something were to happen, I would be able to keep shooting seamlessly.
3. I want a lot of posed photographs. Will you work from a list?
I will be happy to work with you to get formal, posed shots, and what I have found to work best for my style is to have a list of people you would like in formal portraits. I want you to spend most of your time at your wedding, not taking pictures, and so my portrait sessions tend to be short. If you are willing, however, I would love to steal the two of you for a few moments when the time is right during your reception (or after the ceremony) to take a few pictures of just the two of you.
When it comes to the events of the day, I have found that it's best if you just enjoy your day and let me stand back and chronicle it. You don't need to look at the camera when you're cutting the cake and dancing. The couples I have photographed in the past were surprised at the number of photographs they didn't know I was taking!
4. What is your photographic style? What inspires you?
I have a background in theatre, which I have done professionally for years (I am a behind the stage person, though!). I have a strong sense of dramatic lighting and tableaux, and I love finding fresh angles and new perspectives. Your wedding photos are not going to be like anyone else's! I am inspired by photographers Jeff Wall for his interesting moods and creative use of light, and Henri Cartier-Bresson for his honest and moving style.
I am inspired by people. Faces. Families. Humor. Exuberance. Friends. Love. I am watching for the way your eyes sparkle when you laugh. I am inspired by your secret handshake with your best man. I am watching for the way the two of you sing to each other while you're dancing. These are the moments that you will be glad to have forever in print!
I am inspired by details. I love the way the light plays off the beads on your dress and veil, and I am impressed that you made your own flowers and favors! I was a DIY bride, and I know the amount of work that goes into creating a beautiful and personal wedding. I want to make sure you have a record of those personalized but fleeting details of the day. I also want to make sure you have beautiful photos of your heirloom cufflinks and the car-shaped trophies you gave your groomsmen.
